HELP US SUPPORT TAF

Return to China

With the Summer Olympics underway - and all eyes on China -  we want to remind our members that the WTIA is here to help them learn about, and connect with, the enormous opportunities in China.

Since opening an office in Shenzhen last year, we've brought members over to meet with potential business partners and government officials and we've hosted several visiting Chinese delegations interested in Washington.  We're heading back again in October on a trade mission focused on the mobile market.  As always our aim is to create one-on-one business meetings that generate results.

We're also working to create a set of partners and education materials for members to draw upon to smartly evaluate and plan for a China entrance.  Coming up - a class on the Opportunities for Technology & Software Companies in China scheduled for October 2nd and 3rd.

If you are interested in joining us in October - or just want to know more about our China efforts, don't hesitate to e-mail us at China@washingtontechnology.org.

In the meantime - go USA!

Has Your Laptop, PDA or other Device Been Searched by DHS? Congress Wants to Know
There has been some recent news regarding the searching of various types of tech devices, such as laptops, PDAs, Blackberrys, etc. by the DHS of travelers returning to the United States from other countries.

While it is obvious that travelers either entering or re-entering the U.S. are going to be checked out by border and customs officials, sometimes heavily, the apparent increase in the searching of electronic devices has some aspects to it that could be privacy violations.

A July 23 Seattle Times article by Janet Tu, discusses this issue in more detail: Click here to read.

WTIA Ken Myer is quoted in the article.  We also followed up with a letter to most of Washington's Congressional delegation, which can be found in my blog entry.

EVENTS

In case you missed out, July was an exciting month at the WTIA.
On the 17th we hosted the Technology Industry's Summer Celebration at the Pyramid Alehouse & Brewery beer garden, partnering with 20 other organizations in the tech space. With perfect weather, cold beer and an entertaining band, "Take Me Out to the Beer Garden" was one of our largest attended networking events.

We also hosted our 13th Annual Golf Open – Around the World in 18 Holes.  Sponsors, each boasting a different country as a theme, lined the Glendale Country Club providing a whimsical, fun and memorable day.  Golfers voted Quid Pro Quo's Scottish Hole as their favorite; perhaps it was the kilts they wore or the shots of scotch they were distributing!  An awards banquet featuring a delicious BBQ, contest winners and an array of fabulous raffle prizes concluded this unforgettable day.

Be sure to register for our September Networking on Wednesday, September 10th at Terrace Garden in the Red Lion Hotel.  Don't miss one last chance to mix & mingle outdoors before fall descends.
